Racism in football has deep roots and constantly evolves. Richard Giulianotti has made significant sociological advances in the area of football and in particular in the case of England. He uses the term “institutional racism”, in order to describe it as an “invisible” racism that exists for several years in the English football. Giulianotti writes among others “despite the fact that till now there have been considerable efforts to eliminate racism, the specific phenomenon seems to have acquired an institutional form. Very few non-whites occupy coaching positions. The racist stereotypes against minority groups still remain”. The spread of social media played its own role in the phenomenon, as racist attitudes among users who tried to conceal their identity have been observed, directed either to players or fans.
