Racism in football has deep roots and constantly evolves. Richard Giulianotti has made significant sociological advances in the area of football and in particular in the case of England. He uses the term “institutional racism”, in order to describe it as an “invisible” racism that exists for several years in the English football.  Giulianotti writes among others “despite the fact that till now there have been considerable efforts to eliminate racism, the specific phenomenon seems to have acquired an institutional form. Very few non-whites occupy coaching positions. The racist stereotypes against minority groups still remain”. The spread of social media played its own role in the phenomenon, as racist attitudes among users who tried to conceal their identity have been observed, directed either to players or fans.

Through the European program ERASMUS +, the University of Macedonia participates in the project BRISWA (the Ball Rolls In the Same Way for All), which aims to examine the phenomenon of racism in football and to sports in general, to define it in a more comprehensive way and to find solutions to deal with it holistically. In order to achieve the objectives of the project a consortium was created by partners from six European countries, who are considered top in their field and have complementary abilities.

Da sempre lo sport è stato un elemento unificatore: partendo dalle origini ricordiamo come le Olimpiadi nell’antica Grecia rappresentassero uno dei pochi momenti di tregua imposta a qualsiasi conflitto. Erano un pacifico raduno di tutti i greci in cui i partecipanti cercavano quella gloria personale che avrebbe permesso loro di ottenere l’immortalità.
